Last week, Blizzard released an all-new collab for Overwatch 2 that was themed around Persona 5. Five of the heroes in the game received skins inspired by the protagonists of Atlus’ hit RPG, the Phantom Thieves of Hearts. Wuyang, the Support hero who Blizzard recently introduced in Overwatch 2 Season 18, was given a Joker skin, while Mercy and Lifeweaver were given Panther and Fox skins, respectively. Overwatch 2‘s iconic mech pilot, D.Va, meanwhile, was paired up with Persona 5‘s Queen, and the shuriken-wielding Damage hero Genji received a skin based on Skull. In addition to these cosmetics, the collaboration also featured a bunch of paid in-game items, such as highlight intros, weapon charms, name cards, and emotes.
While the quality of the skins featured in Overwatch 2‘s Persona 5 collab has been largely praised, some gamers think that Blizzard and Atlus assigned certain skins to the wrong heroes. Many fans, for example, have argued that it would have made a lot more sense to give Genji the Fox skin rather than Lifeweaver, considering that both of the characters have fox-themed outfits and use swords as their weapons of choice. Players have also expressed disappointment over the lack of skins for the other Phantom Thieves in Persona 5. While it’s too late for Blizzard and Atlus to walk back the decisions they’ve already made, they could rectify this second issue with another Overwatch 2 x Persona 5 collab.
Overwatch 2 Should Get Another Collab With Persona 5
If there’s one crime that Blizzard arguably committed with this Persona 5 crossover event, it was not giving Juno a Noir-inspired skin. Juno and Noir (a.k.a. Haru Okumura) was easily the one pairing that many gamers assumed would be featured in the collab ahead of its release. Looking at the two characters in greater detail, it’s easy to see why: Juno and Noir are not only voiced by the exact same English voice actress, Xanthe Huynh, but they also have very similar personalities. Noir and Juno have a similar space motif in their backstories, as well. Juno is a literal Martian — the first human born on Mars, that is — while Noir’s father’s Palace has an elaborate space station theme. It’s baffling, then, that Blizzard and Atlus didn’t decide to give Noir some representation in this collab.
Speaking of baffling, one of the other big missed opportunities in the collaboration is Sombra not getting an Oracle skin. Sombra and Oracle don’t exactly have matching personalities, but the two of them are both hackers. Since Oracle (a.k.a. Futaba Sakura) was the navigator for the Phantom Thieves in Persona 5, she didn’t have any trademark weapons, but she was able to debilitate enemies with certain attacks, much like Sombra. The two characters would have fit each other quite well, in that sense.
Potential Skins that Blizzard Could Add in a Second Overwatch 2 x Persona 5 Collab
- Juno as Noir (Haru Okumura)
- Sombra as Oracle (Futaba Sakura)
- Wrecking Ball as Morgana
- Hanzo as Crow (Goro Akechi)
- Kiriko as Violet (Kasumi Yoshizawa)
One of the more interesting characters to include in another potential Overwatch 2 x Persona 5 collab would, perhaps, be Morgana. Of course, since Morgana is basically a talking cat, it would normally be pretty hard to find a hero for him with similar proportions. Fortunately, though, there is one animal hero in Overwatch 2, the mech-piloting hamster Wrecking Ball, that does kind of fit the bill here. Wrecking Ball isn’t a cat, sure, but Blizzard and Atlus could still give him a Morgana skin by dressing him up as the cat in question and changing the colors of his mech to make it resemble Morgana’s car form.
Aside from the ones listed below, there are technically two other Phantom Thieves in the Persona 5 canon —Sophie and Wolf — but they’re only present in the spin-off game, Persona 5 Strikers.
Overwatch 2 Doesn't Have Obvious Counterparts for Some of the Other Phantom Thieves in Persona 5
The other two Phantom Thieves in Persona 5 that haven’t been mentioned yet, Crow and Violet, don’t have any obvious pairings like the other characters do, but it would still be great if Blizzard and Atlus released skins for them in a future crossover event. Hanzo, for example, is perhaps the hero that would fit a Crow skin the best, since both he and Crow’s Persona, Robin Hood, wield a bow and arrow. Violet, on the other hand, could be paired up with Kiriko, because they have similar body types. Like all the characters in Persona 5, Kiriko and Hanzo are both Japanese, so it would make a lot of sense for Blizzard to feature them in a second Overwatch 2 collab involving the game.
